Children Education in Early Stage of Age-Based Construction of Integrative Curriculum (Part 5)

Prof Madya Dr. Mastura Badzis, Director, Development Research Center of Children (NCDRC) Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Malaysia (Vice President Helwa)

Integrative Curriculum Construction

Philosophy of early childhood education that is based on an integrative approach, if examined in depth is based on the following concepts that are integrated between the two views:

1. Construction of manners and character building.
2. Play is the main task of the child.
3. Children are individuals who are unique and different from each other.
4. Neurological and sensory stimulation through active participation in all activities.
5. Freedom and space for children to identify what they want and are able to do.
6. Meet the spiritual needs balance, physiological, psychological and physical growth of children.
7. A conducive environment, fun and safe.
8. Concern for the environment and the provision of healthy eating and clean.
9. Respect for diversity and rights in equal shares.

In fact, whether in the west or the east, all the people expect their children toward character building and personality of high character and prudence in dealing with globalization is increasingly challenging. All parents would want to produce a generation of strong-minded, critical and creative thinking in every aspect of life.

However, a discovery that I want to talk about after the fact revealed from ancient history. Perhaps for these people who think the theories and knowledge related to child development, parenting education and a modern approach to educating children, especially in the early stages of life dominated by the west and not relevant to Islam.

Often the subject or the subject of the psychological development of children who are taught in schools and institutions of higher education referred to the findings highlighted by the West. The reality of modern approaches that we see today is actually dominated by Islamic scholars in its glory once. We often say about Jean Piaget and cognitive development theory, but we forget the Ibn Sina (980-1036 AD 370-428 Hijria =) which tried the same thing centuries before Piaget. These days we are busy talking about the Emotional Intelligent pioneered by Howard Gadgner without realizing Ibn Khaldun (733-808 Hijria = 1332-1406 AD) was for centuries the peeling issue in his

'almuqaddimah'. We began to speak about the importance of understanding individual differences in growth among children without reference to the writing of Al-Ghazali and his arguments about the issue in talking about the issues of socio-emotional development of children.

There are many educators of children are so busy dealing with the importance played by learning as a curricular approach is most appropriate to the child because it refers to the natural characteristics of children who really love to play. Name Froebel, Susan Isaacs, Mc Millan, and many more theories about the game from the perspective of the west in the call and the head. Presumably it has been dominated by so many prominent scholars such as Al-Ghazali, Ibn Sina, Ikhwan Al-Safa and so forth. In fact, many of the hadiths that mention the importance of play in the lives of children who showed its suitability as a key approach to the development of a child's learning. However, as these hadith are not given the attention and often stripped. So when Muslims talk about children's development is certainly a reference Western scholars writing without being aware of or might forget, have no such effort was recorded and described by previous scholars, for example, Ibn Qayyim Al-Jauziah in "tuhfatul maudud fi ahkam almaulud".

Muslims who study the psychology of education today is certainly familiar with the theories put forward by Behaviourist, Social Learning Theory, and so forth. Among the main ideas put forward by this theory is the child through observation and Students easily replicate what the treatment. To maintain good behavior displayed by a child, then they should be strengthened. A brilliant Islamic scholars Imam Al-Ghazali, who discuss such details in advance of such problems in his Ihya 'Ulumuddin and produce five major aspects in the education of children, particularly in the early stages of development: Qudwah (Role model), Mulahazah wa mutaba'ah ( Observation and imitation), i'tiyad (custom / habit), the issue of Al-thawab wa al iqab (reward and punishment) and advice (advice) as a solution.

Imam Al Ghazali was so stressed the importance of parents and educators need to be a role model or an excellent attitude or behavior as shown by their parents is actually the curriculum in the education of a child. In accordance with the nature of children who love to imitate the behavior or anything that is in front of him, and as pointed out by Imam Al Ghazali, children learn through observation that if left unchecked it will become a habit or I'tiyad and difficult to be formed. In addressing this problem parents or educators to give a choice between consolidation and better rewards or punishments. Roads are our best advice is to give the approach is "to educate people with mental or alhal bilhal." As stated in the essay book "al-walad ayyuha."

This is an example of applying the technique of educating children at an early stage of age-based integrated curriculum integration appeared between the views of Western scholars and Muslim scholars in assessing and solving the problem of dealing with things that happen in the life of a child. Integrative approach also gives the meaning of continuity between theory and practice, evidence of the beliefs and practices as well as integration of the head with the implementation of a trust to be established.

More Information...

In fact, Islam has a real and reflected the theory but in terms of applications, most western scholars will attempt to implement the try through scientific studies and conduct further experiments and upon being satisfied with the impact of effective and they are too proud to say this is a new theory and Luckily for those who practice it.! In reality, this is the cause of backwardness of Muslims in the world of globalization. No less and no blame Islam, but the attitude of Muslims who have converted. "Allah will not change the fate of a people until they change it themselves ..." It is true the word of God!
