Today's Children-Tomorrow's Leaders

By Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD

All children are uniquely gifted—mentally, physically and spiritually. Unfortunately, education is presented in a ‘one size fits all’ package. The best learning opportunity takes place in a setting where each child is well known and every child’s individual process within a school year can be measured and celebrated.

At its best, education inspires and fosters the child to learn at the speed of their personal potential. As part of the educational experience, real learning also demands that students be challenged to live up to their potentials as students, citizens and as leaders of the future.

To ensure that your child is receiving the education she/he needs:

• Determine how individual learning gains within the school system is measured. Ensure that your child’s school can demonstrate exactly where your child began the year and how much academic progress she/he makes within the school year.

• Determine if a personalized education plan is available to maximize your child’s learning potential.

• Determine if the core curriculum ensures your child is receiving a comprehensive education.

• Determine if core curriculum includes subjects such as: music, art and physical education.

• Determine if your child will have access to both gifted classes and extra support. Having the flexibility of gifted classes will ensure that your child can acquire greater knowledge in areas she/he excels in without losing extra individualized attention in subjects where your child needs help.

• Determine how character education is incorporated into the learning experience/ environment.

Creating today’s children into tomorrow’s leaders requires educating the whole child—a synthesis of head and heart knowledge. Your child deserves this level of comprehensive education. Expect and accept nothing less.
